Removing The Idols

We need to remember God’s Word. That is the final principle in the book of Malachi and it’s actually the final statement of the entire Old Testament. In Malachi 4:4-6, God basically sums up all 39 books, all 929 chapters of the “before Christ Bible” with an urgent reminder to remember His truth and teaching. There are 3 basic reasons why this is so important . . .

One of the best ways to honor God is to make Him the top priority in our lives. That’s the message of Malachi 3:13 – 4:3. If you look closely at this section of Scripture, one of the things you will notice is that two groups of people are highlighted: those that say “It is vain to serve God” (v.14), and those who “feared the LORD” (v.16). It basically comes down to those who prioritize God in their lives and those who do not.

A few years ago, a famous author wrote these powerful words about Jesus:

"He knew the price for your sins was death, and He knew that the source of your sins was you. And since He couldn't bear the thought of eternity without you, He chose the nails."

Those last four words are full of impact, "He chose the nails." Jesus willingly chose to endure the cross and all of of the suffering that accompanied His death, burial, and resurrection; for your sake and for mine. Jesus loves us that much.

Hard truth can be tough to take and difficult to digest. Hard truth is a-lot like medicine – we don’t like it and it doesn’t always taste good, but it is good for us. That’s the kind of truth God has for us in Malachi 3:8-12. This passage provides us with the 7th way that we can honor God according to the book of Malachi, and that is: by giving our tithes and offerings properly.

In our culture, it’s the norm to want instant gratification. We have been culturally conditioned to want what we want when we want it, and we want it – right now! Whether it’s IM, Blackberry’s, or high speed 3G networks, or just fast-food, instant coffee, and microwave popcorn we have become a society that is unwilling to wait. Step-by-step isn’t good enough anymore – because it’s not fast enough. We want everything at the push of a button or by the click of a mouse.

The word “Honor” has a variety of definitions. In the Bible, the English word “Honor” is often used to refer to treating someone or something as extremely precious or valuable. That is exactly how you and I are to treat God and the relationship that we have with Him, if we’ve become Christians and genuine followers of Jesus Christ. At first glance, honoring God may seem like a monumental task.

For the past week or so, during my own personal time with God, Ephesians 5:15-16 has been brought to my attention repeatedly. It says, "15 Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise,16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil." (Ephesians 5:15-16 NASB). There is a-lot I could say about what God has been teaching me through this passage. But recently, my friend in ministry, Pastor Jerry Gillis shared some thoughts about this, and he puts it pretty well.

Malachi 2:13-16 is one of those “tough love” passages in the Bible. In this passage, God lets His people know that He has basically turned His back on them and that He is not pleased with them because they have dishonored Him. Specifically, they had dishonored Him by mishandling marriage and pursuing divorce without Biblical justification.

During the Spring of 2009 (boy that seems like so long ago, doesn’t it?) we started talking about honor. In fact, we started a series of blog posts based on the Old Testament book of Malachi, because the book of Malachi is all about honor; specifically, it’s all about honoring God. The book of Malachi highlights 9 different practical ways that you and I can live lives that honor God.
